The Wicked Grace Project: 'Vigilance'

Thanks to the remarkable , I was lucky enough to participate in the fabulous and ambitious Wicked Grace Project! 

I was one of 7 artists who took part in creating five suits of cards for a one-of-a-kind Wicked Grace deck - an original and unusual birthday gift project for the fabulous Greg Ellis. 52 individually painted designs for 52 cards. Also, every card has a balancing ‘opposite’ card. I painted 10 cards in total using GimpShop (with a mouse since I don’t own a tablet *cackles*). Each card has a different symbolisation, and a character from Dragon Age to match. 

This was my final card - and for Vigilance, a young Ser Cullen kneeling in preparation to become a Templar, praying and reciting the chant as part of his inaugural vigil, seemed a perfect choice. This one wasn't as much about symbolisation as it was about painting a story. I also kept flashing back to his conversation with the Inquisitor in Haven, about his training, and the lengthy prayer vigil involved... So don't let that solemn demeanor fool you! (I'm sure the poor boy is absolutely bored out of his mind.) The style of this card, like the rest of the series, is loosely based on the DAI card style, so for each I created my own interpretation and design rather than create full arcana for each character.
